Correct Your Tax Return — Get What You're Owed

A filed tax return is not always the final answer. If you realized something was wrong, received a corrected tax form, missed a deduction, or need to update your filing information, amended tax return preparation can help fix the issue.

  • Federal (Form 1040-X) and California amended returns
  • Correct errors, add missing income, or claim missed deductions
  • Fix incorrect filing status or dependent claims

Amended Returns for Any Reason

Original returns are not always perfect. Sometimes a document arrives late. Sometimes a credit was missed. Sometimes income was reported incorrectly. Sometimes the IRS or California FTB sends a notice that reveals something needs to be fixed.

Missing Documents

Received a W-2, 1099, corrected tax form, or other tax document after you already filed? We prepare the amended return so your income and records are brought up to date.

Missed Deductions or Credits

If you missed a deduction, credit, income adjustment, or tax benefit you were entitled to claim, an amended return may help you recover money you left on the table.

Filing Status or Dependent Errors

Filing status and dependent claims can significantly affect a return. If the wrong filing status was used, a dependent was missed, or a dependent was claimed incorrectly, we can help correct the issue.

Corrected K-1s or Unreported Income

Corrected K-1s, brokerage statements, 1099s, and other tax forms can change what should have been reported on the original return. We help update the return so income, deductions, and credits are reported correctly.

What We Do

We review your original return, identify what needs to change, prepare the corrected version, and explain the result before anything is filed.

Return Review

We start by reviewing your original return alongside any new, missing, or corrected documents. We identify exactly what changed and determine whether the amendment results in a refund, additional tax, or no change.

Form 1040-X Preparation

We prepare Form 1040-X, the federal amended individual income tax return. This form explains what changed from the original return and shows the corrected amounts.

State Amended Return

If the federal change affects your California return or another state return, we prepare the amended state return as well. Many federal changes flow through to the state, so correcting only one side may not be enough.

Filing & Follow-Up

We prepare the complete amended return package, review it with you, and explain what to expect after filing. Depending on the return and filing method available, some amended returns may be e-filed while others may need to be mailed.

IRS Notice Response

If you are amending because the IRS or California FTB contacted you first, we review the notice and explain what it means. In some cases, an amended return is the right response. In other cases, the agency may need documents or a written explanation instead.

Multi-Year Amendments

Sometimes the same mistake affects more than one year. This can happen with depreciation, rental property reporting, business income, carryovers, investment reporting, or repeated filing errors.

How It Works

Simple Steps to Correct Your Return

Amending a return is straightforward when you have the right help. Here is what the process looks like.

Bring Your Original Return

Bring a copy of the return you need to correct, plus any new or corrected documents — W-2c, corrected 1099, new receipts, or whatever changed. We review both together.

We Prepare the Amendment

We prepare Form 1040-X (and the state amendment if needed), calculate the difference, and write the IRS explanation. We review the completed amendment with you before anything is filed.

File & Wait

We send you the signed return ready to mail. The IRS typically processes amended returns within 8-12 weeks. We are available if any follow-up questions come in.

Amended Returns — Frequently Asked Questions

How long do I have to file an amended return?

To claim a refund, you generally have 3 years from the original filing deadline (or 2 years from the date you paid the tax, whichever is later). There is no time limit for amendments that result in additional tax owed, but interest and penalties continue to accrue.

Can you fix a tax return I filed myself?

Yes. We offer fix tax return services for returns filed through tax software, another preparer, or by the taxpayer directly. We review the original return and determine what needs to change.

How long does the IRS take to process an amended return?

The IRS currently takes 8-12 weeks to process most amended returns, though it can take longer during peak periods. You can check the status at Where's My Amended Return on IRS.gov.

Do I need to amend my state return too?

In most cases, yes. If the federal change affects your California taxable income, you will need to file an amended California return as well. We prepare both together.

What if I owe more money after the amendment?

You will owe the additional tax plus interest from the original due date. Paying as soon as possible reduces the total amount owed. We walk you through exactly what is due and when.

Filed Something Wrong? We Can Fix It.

The sooner you correct a tax return error, the better. Heath Income Tax provides amended tax preparation services to help you review the original return, identify what needs to change, and prepare the corrected filing.
